Fashion for Good: Oaklands College Students Pack with Purpose

Last week, fashion students at Oaklands College came together for a high-energy, hands-on challenge: a 25-hour Packathon to pack 1,000 boxes of clothing and footwear. These items, generously donated by UNIQLO, Hela Brands, WILLIAM LAMB GROUP, and One+All, are already on their way to support families displaced by the war in Ukraine, children at an orphanage for the deaf in Sierra Leone, and communities in crisis across our international network.

Each box carries both the Oaklands College and Goods For Good logos — along with the name of the student who packed it. We even placed AirTags in a few of the boxes, so students can track the journey and see just how far their efforts reach.

A Partnership with Purpose

The Packathon was the first major event as Oaklands College’s Charity of the Year for 2025–2026, but our partnership is already well-established. Over the past year, we’ve collaborated on:

  • Student work placements (including a team of three in February 2024)
  • Careers fairs and fundraising events
  • A shared mission to link sustainability, education, and social responsibility

Led by Natalie Sturman (Head of Fashion), and supported by Clare Dolan (Vice Principal) and Andrew Slade (Principal), the Packathon was a powerful display of student energy and commitment.

“This kind of partnership shows students what’s possible when creativity meets compassion. They’re not just learning about fashion — they’re applying it in ways that change lives.”

Rob Metcalfe, Vice Principal, Oaklands College

Tackling Fashion Waste

Our Fashion For Good programme tackles a growing global challenge: every year, millions of garments are destroyed or dumped in landfill — not because they’re unwearable, but because they’re unsold, returned, or classed as seconds.

At the same time, nearly 10% of the world’s population lives in poverty, without access to basic everyday essentials. By working with ethical brands and committed partners, we’re creating a system where perfectly usable clothing is diverted from waste streams and delivered directly to people in need. It’s a circular model that benefits both the planet and communities in crisis.

Purpose in Practice

The Oaklands Packathon shows that circular fashion isn’t a trend — it’s a responsibility. It’s also a powerful opportunity: to educate, to empower, and to provide practical support where it's most needed.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made the event possible — from our brand donors to the students who gave up their time (and sleep!) to make a difference. This event is just the beginning of a year-long collaboration with Oaklands College — and we’re excited for what’s ahead. From education to humanitarian aid, fashion to fundraising, this partnership is a blueprint for how purpose and learning can come together to create lasting change.
